Using PSP6 and KPT3 Spheroid Designer
Planet with halo

This tutorial assumes that you have a basic working knowledge of PSP6 including layers. I hope you enjoy it. If you have any trouble with it, please email me vikki@brovik.com

just a spacer
  1. Create a new 400x400 transparent canvas.

  2. Double click on Layer 1 in the Layer Palette to open the Layer Properties screen and name this layer "Planet".

  3. Starting in exact center of canvas draw a circle selection about 180x180.

    Look at the lower left corner of your PSP screen for the status bar and when you see 200x200 there, you know you're in the center. start in the middle

    Click and drag your mouse until you see 180x180 or something close to that in the third set of numbers. 181x181

  4. Flood fill the selection with white.

  5. Open KPT3 speroid designer.

  6. Click the single sphereClick on the big, single sphere.

  7. Choose B14 Choose B14 for your bmp texture.
    Click on the arrow to bring up the bump map list and scroll down towards the bottom to find B14.

  8. Change bmp height Change bmp height to 6%.
    Click on the little sphere and drag to the left to lower the bmp height.

  9. Rotate the bmp map Click on the little sphere and drag right or left to rotate the bmp map texture if desired.
    Rotate or drag Alternately, click on the preview window for the bmp map texture and drag it around until you like what you see in the main preview window.

  10. Change bmp zoom Change bmp zoom to 96.2%.
    Click on the little sphere and drag to the right to increase the zoom.

  11. Make it round Change Sphere curvature to 70.5%.
    Click on this sphere and drag to the right to make the curvature larger.

  12. Change the ambience and diffusion Change Ambience to 0% and Diffuse to 96%.
    Click on the sphere and drag left/right to change Ambience. Click and drag up and down to change the diffusion percentage.

  13. Leave the Transparency set at 0%.
    Click on the third sphere of that group and drag to the left to decrease transparency if it's not already at 0%.

  14. Change hue Light Hue RGB - choose color
    Click on the sphere and a ball of color will appear. Without letting go of the mouse, move your cursor to the color you'd like your planet to be and then release.

  15. Decrease Light intensity Light Intensity.
    Click on the sphere and drag to right or left to change the intensity of the light. I have it set at 82% for this planet.

  16. Apply it! Click the Checkmark to apply the filter.

OK.. The rest of the steps in this tut are performed in PSP.

  1. Go Selections/Modify/Contract - 2 pixels.

  2. Invert selection (Selections/Invert) and press Delete key. This step will take care of any possible jaggies.

  3. Deslect (Selections/None)

  4. Duplicate the layer - Layers/duplicate then double click on the layer to bring up the Layer Properties screen and name it "Ring1"

  5. Go Image/Blur/Gaussian Blur = 45

  6. Go Color/Adjust/Brightness and Contrast
    Set Brightness=102 and Contrast=0

  7. Duplicate Ring1 and name it "Ring2"

  8. Move Ring2 below Planet and set Opacity to about 75%
    Click on the layer name and drag Ring2 down to the bottom of the layer palette then drag the Opacity slider to left to bring opacity down..

  9. Set Opacity on Ring1 to about 35%

  10. Go Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

  11. Resize to about 50%
    Image/Resize: Resize All Layers = UNchecked

  12. Go Edit/Copy

  13. Go Edit/Paste/As new image. This step cuts out any excess canvas without losing any of your halo.

  14. Export as tube.

Planet with rings
Here is the same planet with rings around it. Put the rings on their own layer. Erase the part of the rings that should be behind your planet. You may have to move layers around and lower opacity of the rings to get the effect you want. The rings tube can be rotated and colorized to your desired effect.
